RE;CODE's 'Re;collective: Milan' at Milan Design Week

RE;CODE's 'Re;collective: Milan' at Milan Design Week

RE;CODE showcased 'Re;collective: Milan' during Milan Design Week (Fuorisalone 2023), held from April 17th to 23rd. Milan Design Week, the world's largest design fair held annually in April, encompasses a diverse array of exhibitions in fields like furniture and crafts across the city. Building on the theme of solidarity and sustainability, RE;CODE previously highlighted this ethos in its 10th-anniversary exhibition, 'Re;collective: 25 Guest Rooms,' held in October last year in Sinsa-dong. Now, with 'Re;collective' at Milan Design Week, RE;CODE aims to extend the reach of the sustainability message to a broader audience and evoke empathy on a global scale.

'Re;collective: Milan' represents a collaborative venture involving RE;CODE, Schemata Architects—a Japanese architectural firm—and TANK's design unit, DEKASEGI. The exhibition features 12 works by nine designers from Korea, China, and Japan, all passionately dedicated to the theme of sustainability. Each piece is crafted from upcycled materials, spanning fashion, furniture, and industrial design. Noteworthy among them are communal sofas repurposed from upcycled airbags, harmoniously displayed alongside vintage chairs of diverse designs. A standout feature is the innovative use of waste plastic sourced from Korea, China, and Japan, transformed into captivating lighting fixtures. Taking place in DROPCITY, a revamped former central station in Milan, the exhibition adds vibrancy to the evolving landscape of Milanese design.

As an element of RE;CODE's experiential campaign, a hands-on DIY workshop titled "RE;TABLE" was conducted. This complimentary program provided participants with the opportunity to craft keyrings using a variety of materials in a user-friendly manner.

The exhibition drew in approximately 20,000 visitors and clinched the sustainability category at the Fuorisalone Awards.

Participating artists include: EUNHA KIM, HYESUN LEE, JINYOUNG YEON, JO NAGASAKA & NARITAKE FUKUMOTO, KUO DUO, MULTI STANDARD, NURI YEON, KWANGHO LEE, PINWU, RE;CODE, and ROARCRENEW ARCHITECTS.
